Prioritizing joy
Chicago had record breaking snow at the end of November, followed by subfreezing temps. Then it was warm and ICE came back for a couple days to stir things up, then left again. Then the city finally passed a budget. Then it was Hannukah and Christmas! And today it's 55°F and pouring rain, and the snow's been gone for a week, except for little dirty piles in parking corners.
If it's going to be cold and grey in winter, I'd rather have sparkling snow on the ground. I love being outdoors year round, so I've collected appropriate gear to be able to do so. (I'm on the hunt for new gloves; please send your recommendations for warm, flexible, touchscreen gloves).
Example: Our visit to icy Lake Michigan a couple weeks ago. The sun was setting and the light on our neighborhood pier was exquisite, but I couldn't quite get the shot I wanted without laying on the ice and snow covered beach. So I did. My partner Nicklin captured me in action. Here's the shot; worth it? I think so.

Speaking of joy, tomorrow is my birthday! I have no plans except dinner out with my family. I'm planning a party in early 2026, as in recent years I really just want to rest this week between Christmas and the new year.
